A recuring dream?

Me: (to a boy who is ready to hit the bed) Let’s go Kutie, its time for bed. Lets change your diaper, brush your teeth and get to bed.
Boy: (stamping little feet) AAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Me: We can play with the cars tomorrow, now its time for bed
Boy: (inching further away, car still in one hand) AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Me: Come on, let’s go.
(Few minutes pass by and we go through the same conversation again)
(Finally picking the squirming baby)
Boy: Wailing loud
Me: (trying to distract) Look at the clock, its late. See the Tweety bird, its going to fly away, if you don’t stop to cry.
Boy: (trying hard to get away) Wailing louder
Me: Almost done. There we go!

I pick up the little one, and move towards the bathroom.
Me: Let’s brush our teeth. How do we do it?
Boy:(doing the brushing action, with one hand) eeeeeeeee – eeeeeeeee
Me: Here we go, brush, paste lets do it
Boy: (looking horrified) Nooooooooooooooooooo
Me: Let’s do it together
Boy: (moving the head too fast) Crying

10 minutes later, boy still crying, but teeth clean!

Me: Ok all done, stop crying dear one. We are done
Boy: (not too sure yet) sobbing
Me: Shall we go to bed?
Boy: (Nodding yes)
Me: Shall we say ‘Good night to everyone’?
Boy: (nodding)
Me: Here’s Muthu
Boy: Gunut
Granpa: (laughing) Goodnight, little one
Boy: Ammammama ….
Grandma: Yes dear
Boy: Gunut
Grandma: Goodnight dear, sleep well
Boy: Attta
Me: Honey, he is calling you.
Boy: Atta
Honey: Ah, yes
Boy: Gunut
Honey: Good nite
Me: Shall we go?
Boy: (nodding)

Entering bedroom
Boy: Phan
Me: Ok lets switch on the fan
Boy: (smiling, jumping on the bed!)

Can you guess, whose recurring dream reality this is?

A time traveller

Years ago, I had met one my dad's friends who had just retired then. When my dad asked him about how he spends his time now, he chuckled and said that he is having a time of his life! He is now able to spend hours on end with his grandson - playing, napping, eating and seeing things through innocent little eyes. He mentioned that he was unable to do the same with his own two sons, since he was often busy at work. I remember this incident now, every time I am at work, away from my little one.

Time is such a intricate part of life and its best seen through the eyes of your parents and children. Parents can tell you stories of what even you might have forgotten from your past, of bygone years, of ways to do things that are today unheard of… Today I see it though my son. Each day, he is doing something new – saying a new word or even trying to say it, because it wasn’t there yesterday and he will soon grow out it!

In another 25 years, it might be my son writing up a blogs about his mother – her ‘old’ ways that now interfere with the his ‘new’ thinking! Ah! the pains of growing up ...

Mahalo!

What a wonderful time we had. Kutie was scared of the ocean at first, but after two days he settled into it as if he had know it for ages. He played in the white beaches - running & walking. Since it was a great weather he walked around everywhere and enjoyed not being couped up inside the house.

Honey and Dad, went para-sailing and snorkeling - enjoying every minute of a fun-filled adventure. I completely forgot about work, home and everything in between in the few days of glorious sunshine.

Look at this beautiful sunset and beaches and wouldn't you thank the wonderful God for giving us an opportunity to see His wonderful creations! Mahalo!

Can't wait for the Thanksgiving holidays to hit the sunny beaches of Hawaii. I am sure it will be greatest fun for all of us. Now I only need to figure out which stores might still have a few summer dresses ...

Scrapbook of Memories

Each day passes into the night
Dreams are forgotten at daylight.
A lifetime of thoughts goes unwritten,
Flights of fancy never fulfilled.

Scribbling thoughts into paper
Making them stay awhile
Strokes that now color them
Often going by unnoticed!

Why write, if no one reads it?
Why write, if no one ever finds it?
Pieces in black and white,
Can they just be a scrapbook of memories?

'Tis the season

Until a few years back, winter weekends were kind of fun times – sleep-in, take it slow, watch movies cuddled up under a million blankets. Back in India and even when I moved to Dallas, winters were a welcome change from the long summer days of heat and sweat.

California winters are lot darker and bit too dreary. It often rains during the winter months making it worse. I generally don’t prefer to drive and during times like this, it puts a full-stop to any enjoyment.

With the time change, it’s official that shorter days and longer nights are here for the next few months. I feel especially sad for my little boy, whose little list of outdoor fun is down to zero. No more walks in parks, or rides on the swings. I checked lots of websites in trying to figure out some activities for the little guy, but most activities are for toddlers 2 years up. One bright spot on the horizon is the library. Twice a week I can take him there to read a few books, attend a story-time session and just meet up kids his age. One of my co-workers suggested going to the mall which seems like a good idea as well.

The one other ray of sunshine are all the festivals that are round the corner – Diwali, Thanksgiving holidays, Christmas, New Years. With a few holiday weekends round the corner, I am exited to be able to get more time to spend with family and friends and have a good time! (of course how this will impact my Lakshya is another story!)

Trrruck, Caar, Buus

Have you taken a road trip with a 15-month old? It’s bound to be eventful, I can bet that much! Today we decided to drive up to the wineries and with not that much planning ahead; we piled the car with toys and some snacks. I was dreading the loud cries that we might be subjected to from Kutie, being in the car - all cooped up in the car-seat.

What a surprise then that Kutie enjoyed the ride. He loved watching the trucks, cars and buses drive by and shouted at every one of them.

Trruck!” “Big trruck!” “Uncle!”, “Buus”, “Caar” – was what you have heard all the way!

In-between he would do a roll-call by calling each of us out – ‘Amma (moi), Aatha (for achan-dad), Moothu (for muthashan- grandpa), Ammamma (grandma). We all had to answer & confirm that we are present. Wonder if he was a teacher in past life?

Once we got to Napa, he enjoyed the cable car ride and running around the grounds. We had beautiful warm weather and with the color-change on the leaves the place was picturesque.

On our way back, we had to stop at Mac Donald’s to get milk for Kutie – and they charged us $2 for the milk, another $2 for a cup. So note to self: Pack extra milk and variety of snacks – for you never know if your trip would turn out to be longer than expected and you cannot predict toddler behaviors!

The journey overall was enjoyable and we got home 2 wine bottles to enjoy!

The Lion Roars

It was great fun Halloween (except for the after-shocks that we got in the afternoon at work). Kutie was happy to wear his little costume and carry around the 'large pumpkin' basket and go to the neighbors. Of course, when we got there he would rather be picked up and ‘be safe’ in our arms. But as a first real Halloween for him, it was great fun for us to watch this little lion run around wagging his tail and blowing kisses to everyone.

Shivers from the dark

The day started just as usual, the skies were a bit gloomy, perhaps in anticipation? Since our office was throwing a Spooktacular Halloween event, I decided to work from home so that I could take Kutie for the event. By afternoon, the skies cleared and we made our way to office. Kutie dressed up as a lion (I had to fool Kutie to make him think that it was a hooded jacket), looked so cute and happy. At first he was a bit scared to see so many people, but within minutes he settled down. Bunch of colleagues had brought their kids and with all the shows put up, it was a fun time!

We got home and then after a quick walk to the park and back, we settled into the nightly activities of setting up for dinner. As mom was feeding the baby, I decided to catch some TV shows that I have missed over the past weeks (thanks ReplayTV). Dad was in the other room reading news on the internet, and honey just came home and joined me in the living room.

Right then, the earth shook! Yes literally!!!

With a look of utter disbelief I turned to my husband – his face held the same expression. A second later, he said – “It’s an earthquake!” I jumped out of the sofa and ran to the family room and screamed “Get the baby out of the highchair”. A second later, dad was asking should we get out of the house. Standing with Kutie in my arms, I was urging everyone to get underneath the doorway (that was the only thing that I could remember from my survival studies). The moment passed – all was calm.

Neighbors started pouring out confirming our fears, that it was indeed a severe quake though most of us were well. We went back in and tried calling our friends. Of course, lines were jammed for a while.

The news came on 10-15 minutes later about a 5.6 magnitude shake whose epicenter was about 8 -9 miles from our house. A chill ran down our spine!

Throughout our late night dinner, the discussion centered on what we did and did not do. I did not want Kutie running far from me and kept him close, within my arms reach until bedtime.

Having a real life scare right before Halloween is kind of weird and surreal. It was my first quake experience and boy was it a scare! Of course I am happy that everyone was ok and there were no major mishaps, but hope to God I don’t go through one again this lifetime!

Thank You! Lord!

Happy Navratri

This Sunday marks the beginning of the 9 day festival of Navratri (9-nights) - celebrating through 9 nights and 10 days - Goddess Durga. Its a celebration of good triumphing over evil.

We celebrate with nine nights of Garba (traditional Gujarathi dance) and prayers. Its a great time of vibrant colors and songs.

Since Kutie got one of the traditional outfits from our cousin's mom, I wanted to try it on. We went to the temple on Sunday - of course honey was complaining that the shirt looks more like a dress! But believe me he looked so cute and handsome! I just loved it.

Back in Action

All moved in, the unwanted pile of boxes have moved into the garage and we sort of know where everything went. So what do I do next, go back on to school for my project management classes. I am hoping to get everything done by May of next year, so I take the weekend classes which sucks badly as now time with family is reduced to one Sunday!

I am in middle of the lunch break at this class, no distractions as everyone is out of the classroom (and having done with lunch myself) I can peacefully sit and write. But the blank white sheet stares at me as not one cohesive thought comes to mind to write about.

So many events have taken place – Kutie got his first haircut – a complete shave! Two reasons – First he never seemed to have hair and one suggestion was a complete shave to let new hair grow in its place – a fresh start so to speak. Its also part of the tradition to give babies a full shave in the first years of life. We were unsure of how to do this as we are not familiar with any salons doing a full shave for babies, so we decided to take a stab at it ourselves. I held Kutie in my arms and my honey sat with the razors. We heard a few cries of protest but overall Kutie was a trooper and now he looks so different from his usual self now that we see his complete round, bare head!

Kutie is growing up to be a wonderful talkative mischievous one year old. It is so wonderful to see the inquisitive curious brain at work. I thank Lord Guruvayoorappan again each time he smiles, laughs and runs into my arms!

Round Three: Lets the games begin

Its been ages since I posted about my lakshya or g and no prizes to the correct guess – I have been avoiding it. No & I did get my desired weight and my son is almost 15 months, and I am miles away from my goal. So many things pushed me off – house hunting, school, work … Fine they are excuses but they are real.

So why am I writing about it again? My hall-of-shame – should be deleted from my blog!!! If I had the guts, I think I would do it. Or maybe the day I hit rock bottom … Since that hasn’t happened and there is a silver lining I am writing about it again!

Our office opened a new gym and with a colleague joining forces with me, it been fairly easy to hit the gym for at least for about 30 mins each day. So new ground rules:

  • Hit the office gym 5 days at lunch hour for a full hour
  • Hit the stairs
  • Avoid the sweets
  • Check back more often

Lets hope I am older, wiser and will be able to keep it up. Jinx me not!

Witches, Ghosts, & Scary Stuff!

Halloween is almost here! Candy & Dress-up what more would a kid want?

Today when I pass by the local Target or Home Depot store, I show the little scary monster, witches & skeletons to Kutie and he just looks at it and smiles. He thinks of them as just things that seem to lit up and make noise. (the only thing that he seemed scared about was when the monster made a loud 'arrrrrrrrrrr' sound). I guess fear is a learned behavior to most extent.

Now that we have moved (& settled) into our new house, I am hoping that our neighbors are into Halloween, so that I can do some decorations, get an outfit for Kutie to go trick-or-treating! If nothing, I guess since Kutie can walk now I will be able to take him to my office for a some quick Halloween treats and fun! Now, if only I can decide what Kutie should be - a wizard, a ninja, a lion, a superhero or .... Lets go shopping!

Pile of boxes

I am sure everyone has been through the pains of moving and settling into a new house, felt the distress of not finding that right cup for your morning tea, or having to browse through a pile of clothes the next morning to get to work! I think the worst part is cleaning out the old apartment and making sure you move the last remaining pile of boxes!

Through all this Kutie is showing signs of discomfort as well! Poor guy, he seems so lost. He was without his favourite toys for two whole days before we were able to open it for him, he is most likely missing his friends from the apartment too.

But one blessing was that he started to walk last week (on Grandparents Day, no less) and since then he got at least a week's head start before we moved into the house with complete hardwood floors. I can't imagine the pain of walking on fours on hardwood floors! Of course, Kutie seems to enjoy walking and making loud noise on the floors. Once his cars were out in the open, he seemed to have more fun in driving it, now that it moves faster and makes even more noise (even without the music turned on).

But the pile of boxes still remains! I am hoping that we get done with most of them by this weekend - otherwise I am sure the pile of boxes will just be transfered into the garage where its likely to sit for another century!

Lord Ganesha

I just find it amazing how many things tie humans together - and for the most part we miss them out completely! At least within my limited capacity of knowledge ( and I know I am not a scholar on anything) I notice so many irrefutable things.

Today is Ganesh Chatruthi and for many Indians marks the beginning of a lot of festivals and celebrations in the coming months. During my childhood days, our neighborhood would put up a pandal and have the celebrations in a grand scale for 5 days. Each night the kids would put up shows (dances, songs, magic tricks) and it would turn into an informal competition - especially our group and another building group. It would be a a matter of great honor to ensure that we get the majority of praise the end of our program. Today as I turn around and look at my childhood self, I want to tell her to stop being so aggressive and have more fun instead. I am sure the next generation is going through the same thing - though the groups have changed - and new affiliations have formed.

Listen to a baby's babble, see them walk, see them trying to get our attention - all of them - blue eyed or brown, blonde or brunette - they all do the same thing!

I hope Lord Ganesha - the remover of obstacles - brings us the knowledge and understanding and brings everyone closer together!

Painting, Cleaning and Moving ...

House-warming is done, & we got some painters to paint the house. But our major work of packing and moving still remains.

Last couple of weeks were spent in ensuring that painters do a decent job and shopping around for new appliances. My parents arrived the day after labor day and its been a great blessing. Kutie adjusted pretty quickly to them and is growing very fond of them. He is pretty good with new people, especially loves kids and the attention from grown-ups.

This weekend is the big move. I am sure it will take us weeks before we find a place for each of our stuff and settle into life in the neighborhood. But the actual moving and cleaning out the old apartment- is so much of work that it almost bores me.

Wish I could just blink my eyes and transport everything to its place in the new house!

Our little dream home ...

A good home must be made, not bought.
Joyce Maynard, "Domestic Affairs"

My home is not a place, it is people.
Lois McMaster Bujold, "Barrayar", 1991 US science fiction author

And my favorite --
Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam, Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home.
John Howard Payne (1791 - 1852)

Grihapraveshnam

A big event for home-owners, its the ritual to boil milk, basically lit the fire in the kitchen for the first time ever. It is considered auspicious to spill milk as its a sign of prosperity and well-being.

We decided to conduct our house-warming ceremony on the first day of Onam which is a great day and the Muhurtam was set for 6 AM to 6.20 AM early morning on August 26th. We invited some close friends over for the simple event and breakfast afterwards.

We woke up early that day, took a bath and headed over to our new house. We were running a bit late, & got to our house only by 6.10 or so. My honey and I entered the house and I let the diya and placed some flowers at the altar of Lord Guruvayoorappan.

Then we rushed to the kitchen, to lit the stove and heat the milk. We had a new vessel especially bought for the ceremony and we waited anxiously to see the boiling of milk. As if on cue, our friends arrived in time to see the spilling of milk. Since it is considered "prasadam" we decided to make some payasam out of the same milk for everyone.

My mother-in law and her friend started to make idly and tea for everyone. I played the grand hostess and walked everyone around our new house. Kutie was at his best behaviour (even though he woke up very early) playing with everyone and running around the large empty house. He seemed to enjoy the hardwood floors and crawled around with so much noise that we were afraid that he will get hurt!

We came back to our apartment for lunch and to get some rest. As it is customary to sleep in the new house on the day of grihapraveshnam we went back home. Next day being Monday, we had to get up early and rush back to our apartment to get ready for work.

All in all, the event was a great! It was interesting to wake up in our house and move around. I find myself dreaming of what it will be like to have actually move in here ... which would not happen until 2nd week of September.

Dream Home

Yes, we are finally done with our house hunt! We got our dream home(today we got the keys). A nice little cozy house where we are going to build our home!

What a roller-coaster ride it was!

During the last 6 months, weekends were spent in checking out open houses, looking at real-estate websites and running all around the Bay area. Sometimes irritated with our agent, at times tired of checking out bad houses, its been one big journey. Offers fell through and there was a point when I thought this was not going to happen for us! But now all that is in the past!

This is my first official house and I have mixed feelings about it. I am elated at owing a property, thrilled at the prospect of decorating it, scared out of my mind knowing how much I owe the bank! I guess, mixed feelings are part of anything new....

"I may be small, but I am the BOSS"

Yes! Thats what I hear from my little one year old! Well no! He can say only a couple of words, most are still unintelligible, but I can tell by his behavior that's what he is thinking!

Take away his favourite toy or be a second late in getting his food ready, he will crawl away from you, turn around and cry out loud. And then suddenly the tears flow, his eyes look so disappointed, that you give in!

I know, I know, you are going to tell me who is the adult, but common on - you look into the eyes of a cute one year old and tell them No ... and see if they understand! Think about it ... poor baby, they seem to understand most of what we say to them, they are learning to walk, to explore. Unfortunately they are not the best communicators yet. Even now, the only tool they have are cries, yells and tears! Wouldn't you do the same thing if you were in their shoes - say in a foreign land, and no understanding of their speech!

Babies (and adults in a foreign land) learn to communicate as best as they can. They tell you (my son points to objects, makes various sounds to show us his displeasure or needs) but we often understand it a bit late! And for my son, that delay is unacceptable! I am sure he will learn patience (hopefully) and until then he gets to be the boss! (Sort of!)

Trip to Lake Orville

Kutie's birthday was a great day. He was at his best behavior (like always) and everyone had fun. The event went by without much hiccups (we could not get the music system to play, and we forgot all about ice cream with cake, though guests got a second round of desert). The day ended with a peaceful yawn from Kutie.

Since all his cousins were here, the house feels full with all the noise - the kids are always on Playstation, we are trying to catch up with all the gossip our sisters and inlaws and Kutie trying to squeeze in more attention with his cute antics! It was a great reunion.

We decided to treat ourselves and we made a trip to Lake Orville. It was a nice 3 hour drive, without any major events. We got to the hotel, checked in and went out for a drive along to see the dam and the part of the lake. Monday we had planned to be in water all day long with our sea-doo and water boats. Since the kids were underage, we took turns in taking them in the water for a full four hours. Blasting off at 6000 miles, riding the waves was truly fun for everyone. We did get a little sun burnt, but all in good fun.

After a picnic lunch and a little swim near the shores we got back to land tired and happy. We got back and after some time off, the elders went to sleep while we took the kids out to the river beach. The kids P and S had some fun time on the beaches. S was driving his new toy - a remote controlled car and even Kutie was awestruck with the toy. The day was finally over!

Next day we drove back home, and some of the guests started to leave and I realized that the party is finally dwindling down. I am not sure how Kutie will be next week, with everyone gone! Wonder if he will become fussy or get back into his old groove!

Either way, it was a great time ... summer with family and loved ones is one of the best gifts everyone should get. I only hope we can do this more often as Kutie grows up so that he will always have wonderful memories when he grows up.

Happy Birthday!

Happy First Birthday, my dear handsome son!

What a bright sunny day it is,
Glorious for you are with us.

Waiting to unfold!

And grant you all our best wishes.

Almost there!

T minus 1

The guests have arrived, and Kutie has already taken a likening to his big cousin. Follows him around like a little puppy! We are almost ready for the big event.

Just hoping, wishing, praying for a nice, blissful event!

Oh my ears and whiskers, how late it's getting!

T-minus 3

My oh my! Oh my! I feel like the rabbit from Alice's world trying to find all the things that needs to get done soon. Cake, decorations, party list, outfits ... oh dear!!

The guests are pouring in - yesterday evening my aunt-in law and her husband came with their grandson. She is a very nice lady, really sweet. I am exited for Kutie to be meeting so many family members - we think it will be great exposure for him.

My work week has been very hectic - had to be on a call till 12 AM last night - hopefully this busy schedule will end soon and tonight I will get done with cake order and decorations and I will feel much better.

The Seven-Year Itch

Does it exist? Or is it like the Friday the 13th scare (of course this Friday is a 13th, so we will see)

Well, we are in our 7th year of marriage, and I think this is all a big hoax!! If it did, my parents missed their quite a few of their chances. Yes I agree marriages do fail, but if your love is strong it can go through anything. Of course its not easy...

Marriage means being a team, being together, being each others cheerleader! It also means being each other's critic, being each other friend (and friends do have arguments) and being each others advocate. There might be days when one is down, or needs that extra hug! While on other days one wants their own space. One thing to remember is that the person you love had a different lifestyle, a different upbringing (you might like bullseye, he might like an egg white omelet) but you love him/her for their differences. There is definitely a learning curve in understanding this complicated being that you love - its not easy, but its possible!

These are a few other wonderful thoughts that I have come to love ~

Happy marriages begin when we marry the ones we love, and they blossom when we love the ones we marry. ~ Tom Mullen

There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved. ~ George Sand

It is only possible to live happily ever after on a day to day basis. ~Margaret Bonnano

I don't have any major advice, because I think we still have miles to go - but I do hope that we both live happily ever after and grow old together!

Good luck to all couples!

Another crab in the family!

T minus 6

YUP! We have another crab in the family !!! Honey is also a cancerian, just like Kutie. (In fact he had hopes that Kutie, might be born on his birthday.)

And today, is my honey's nakshathira birthday. It was not that big an event; but we got him a Sudoko puzzle which he greatly enjoys and made a little feast in his honor. The weekend was quite busy with last minute shopping and some house cleaning before guests arrive.

Looks like the week ahead is going to very busy with guests, party organization, school exams (Yup I back to school on the Project Management courses) and of course work!!! Wish us luck!

HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
To A Wonderful Husband and a Great DAD!

A lot of things got accomplished - I am happy. Hopefully something will happen on the house hunt as well

7/7/7 -- NICE DATE? Wonder if marriages, births are on an increase?

A Star Birthday

T-minus 8

Like many cultures, we follow the lunar calender for all the big events - birthdays, weddings. For birthdays, we follow nakshathira birthday or the star birthday - the star that you were born under. This generally means that you get two birthdays! One is your 'star' birthday and one the actual birthday (date of birth). The star birthday is a bit complicated because it is based on the lunar cycle and the patterns of solar system. There is no constant date of your star birthday. One year it might be a week before, next year it might days later. Either way, as a kid you get to enjoy two days of fun - and believe me thats all that matters!

Today is Kutie's Star Birthday - and it actually falls on the day he was supposed to arrive - I don't know if I should look for any *hidden* meanings - but its a nice coincidence.

Since its a big day I took PTO from work and decided to have a fun time with the little guy before all the guests start to arrive next week. I wanted to make it special family event. I was hoping to either go to the zoo if the weather was not too hot or go hang out in the pool - apart from the daily birthday oriented festivities of food, going to the temple, new clothes and of course presents!

Going out unfortunately did not materialize, but I still had a great time with Kutie. Kutie got up around 7 & after giving him a quick bath, he said his prayers (Such a cute thing - he will fold his hands and just babble something out) We opened the Lego Dump Truck that we got for him. Of course he still doesn't understand playing with the blocks, but he was quite happy with the dump truck and was pushing it everywhere around the house. I prepared a small sadya(feast), with the usual Malayalam dishes and of course payasam.

Since I had promised myself not to be sitting at the computer today, I played with him all day long. Only break was when he took his afternoon nap and I watched some TV.

It was a great relaxing on a hot summer day.

Cars or Fireworks

T-minus 9

Do boys learn from the womb their expected gender roles?

I ask this because, we went to see the fireworks for the Fourth of July celebrations yesterday evening and even though Kutie looked at them he seemed to be more interested in the cars that drove by the street next to the big parking lot (where we camped up). Every time we would point to the new, colorful firework that blasted into the sky he would stare it for a second and then almost immediately turn his head to look at the car that zoomed past.

It was a weird scene - everyone looking at the wonderful mirage of colors in the sky and Kutie looking at the Fords, Toyotas, and Hondas!

The Countdown Begins

July 4th, 2007 - Happy Independence Day!!!

Its T-minus 10 & counting to Kutie's birthday!!!

Yes can anyone believe it? Last year on this day I was HUGE!!! Two days away from my due date. Nothing was happening - no contractions, no pain - we were only wondering when the little guy will show up! Daily visits to the Ultrasound became a routine and for me I was just plain hot and tired all the time.

This year, its a completely different story. The little guy is ready to kick butt! He is crawling, babbling and the biggest difference - The little guy is the center of attention!!!! (but eh! he still seem to prefer me over everyone else - so thats good)

Favorite Quotes

Its been ages since I have written an article for Women 2 Women (you can see where I am going with this, excuses and more excuses, so I will skip that!) but I loved this topic this week. Its truly hard to pick one quote, when there are so many wonderful thoughts

A few quotes stay with us forever, while a few skip from memory. Though I had to pick one I have to list a few of my favorite ones here!

Motherhood ~

When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child. ~Sophia Loren, Women and Beauty

All mothers are working mothers. ~Author Unknown

At work, you think of the children you have left at home. At home, you think of the work you've left unfinished. Such a struggle is unleashed within yourself. Your heart is rent. ~ Golda Meir

Love ~

I hold it true, whate'er befall;
I feel it, when I sorrow most;
'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.
~ Tennyson

Where there is love there is life. ~ M.K.Gandhi

Let us not be satisfied with just giving money. Money is not enough, money can be got, but they need your hearts to love them. So, spread your love everywhere you go. ~Mother Teresa

The first duty of love is to listen. ~Paul Tillich

Rest in next!

Four walls and a roof

A lot happens inside the four walls of a house. A family can live and die, a person can love and hate, a child can be born and nourished! A family is built when two people come along and decide to take the biggest leap in faith - Living Together!

In every conceivable manner, the family is the link to our past, the bridge to our future. --Alex Haley

We are in the middle of house hunting and with every house comes the discussion of - Is the right one for us.? Do we go for a 3 bedroom or a 4 bedroom? Do we need a big backyard or a small one? Do we need to be near our work? Do we want a big kitchen or can we manage with this tiny one? And the million dollar question - Can we afford this one?

It's been two months since we started the process and I still do not see the light at the end of the tunnel - but I see the glory in the process. We are still having arguments, but we have learned to listen; we are probably having more anxiety attacks, but we have learned to comfort each other. We have grown closer together as a family.

I am sure we will find our little house to call home some day soon, and until then I am happy with my little family under this roof (rental it might be!) safe and sound.

A masterpiece

We made Kutie draw with Crayon finger-paint today to commemorate father's day with his First official masterpiece. Here's a snapshot -

Ok I might be biased, but I think even Da Vinci would be ready to tutor Kutie, to become a grand-master one day!

Father's Day

Daddy's little boy is turning one in 4 weeks and today is Daddy's first Fathers Day! I hope its a glorious one & one of many more to come. Kutie and I made him a nice set of "12 months of Kutie" photo collage (proud of it!), framed and gift wrapped. I think, dad was happy with the gift, and to top it, here an extra special jingle!

He's a million dreams come true
He's our little prince.
In him I see you,
In you I see the pride.

He has your eyes
He has your smile
He's Daddy's Boy
So easy to see!

He adores you, you 're his hero.
You 're the BEST (always will be)
Happy Fathers Day!

And to my wonderful daddy, though you are miles away I hope you know -->
I LOVE YOU - plain and simple.

You have been my anchor, You have been my saving grace.
You always put family first and I was always top of that list
I am thankful to you, for everything.
My dear, wonderful dad, I celebrate you today and always
Love, K

Poems for Kutie

No I know I am not a great writer, but I try! :)

My son has a little toy that sings
"One little birdy, singing so sweet, one fluffy cloud and one big tree!
Two little butterflies love to fly, two little butterflies fluttering by.
Three little bumble bees full of fun, three little bumble bees buzz buzz buzz.
Four little flowers pretty as you please, four little flowers flowing in the breeze
Five little lady bugs meet for lunch, five little lady bugs munch and crunch."

Now for my verse
Six little puppies go on a walk, six little puppies love to bark.
Seven little fishes in the pond, seven little fishes go round and round.
Eight little snails try to run, eight little snails have some fun!
Nine little stars in the sky, nine little stars far away.
Ten little fingers on my hand, ten little fingers to play in the sand.

Teaching an old dog new tricks

Well maybe not that old!

I am trying to teach Kutie all the wonderful things there is to learn. He has mastered the art of handshake, kiss, and peek-a-boo (he will close his eyes for a second, and brings one hand up to hide his eyes ... really cute). I thought I was doing great ... and then came the call from my mom.

She told reminded me to teach him how to pray! And thats when it hit me .... why did not I think about it ... such a basic, wonderful thing to learn! To fold your hands, close your eyes, and think about all the blessings that you have ... with a silent thanks! I have been telling Kutie stories of Shree Krishna, Rama and the likes, and often take him to the temple but prayer is such an important aspect - it binds everyone together, it heals.

Well, better late than never. Thanks, mum - there are still so many things I need to learn from you! Love Ya!!

Babies and Television

I just read a news report on American babies watching too much television. The survey conducted does not clearly state that it might be bad for kids but it is still shocking!

During my childhood days, which are not that far back, we always liked to play outside. We had a “school shift” program so 1 to 5 grades had afternoon shift, while higher grades were in the morning. Each day I remember running back from school to rush to the playground. Mornings were devoted to schoolwork.

Perhaps, TV was most watched during summer holidays – but even then we used to play, read and do other things as well. This was our schedule on most summer days: Early morning bike rides, breakfast, back on the playground or if it was too hot we would meet at someone house, lunch and then afternoons at our homes – reading a book, doing some crafts, painting, and by evenings we were back at the playground. Sometimes we would come back out after dinner to play some shuttle (similar to tennis). Television made its appearance, in between this ‘hectic’ schedule :)

But as we grew older, television did start to make an impact. I remember my parents discussing shutting TV during exam weeks and taking other measures to ensure we devoted our time for studies. (We often negotiated watching TV time to maybe dinner or afternoon breaks) I wonder if this is even possible today. With the influx of so many channels, the ever growing gaming industry, and the internet – there is always something. Marketers of kids programming will say that it’s beneficial with kids learning language and numbers, but can they not learn the same things through books … can we not teach them ourselves?

All this said and done, I love television myself. Love Heroes, love my Netflix … what does that say about me! Double standards! It’s been a long day – maybe I will ponder tomorrow. In the meantime, I like my TiVo recording the shows that I like, so that even if I watch them sometimes a week later – I try to ensure Kutie has not seen television, yet!!!

The Family Table

Does a family table exist is today's fast paced world ...
Often the dinner table is a nice big table, seating 6 or more with a nice chairs and an even better center piece. This piece of furniture in most cases is least used for its purpose of having dinner but used more often has a place to keep other things!
To me, as far back as I can remember, I had my dinners watching TV. We would have dinner together, when my dad got back from work, but I would pick up my plate and move towards the living room to be able to watch TV. My parents always sat at the table, making small talk and an occasional look at the TV. Even today I continue the tradition ... does this mean that my family is doomed!!
      Not really!
Each family needs to find its 'dinner table' - a place where everyone can be together, can spend valuable time as a family and be a whole. This could be the time that I spend with Kutie reading a book, playing with him, taking a walk with him and my honey - talking about work, planning things and just dreaming of the places that we would love to visit one day!

Does dinner table give you quality time?
On an average, 20 minutes is what actual dinner time would take (just a guess) - once the table is set and everyone sits down to eat. Is this value time?
      Maybe!
20 minutes or 20 hours or 20 days or 20 years - anything and everything can be value added time. It is not sitting at the table that adds quality to your family time. Its is the conversations, the memory that lasts a lifetime.
For me, the days that I remember most with my family are our trips - visiting my grandparents and visiting new places. To this day I love going on trips - be it to the beach or a mountain - any new place is a place of interest to me.

What about dinner?
Each person in a family is different, with different tastes. One wants pasta, the other wants rice. Mommy I wont eat a thing today!!!
       Compromise!
There is an old saying "You cannot clap with one hand" so also a person cannot live in a vacuum. We have to learn to like pasta, like rice and also be able to indulge in a little dessert from time to time. Its not always about doing what we like, but taking on something new, sometimes just to do it with the other person.

'The Family Table' can exist in every home - it just needs to be found and treasured!

Conversations

So I have been busy with the scavenger hunt over at Amy's ... and having lots of fun doing it. But I think my honey is getting a little jealous of the amount of time that I am spending at blogs! :) I feel like a kid getting to know a new toy - breaking it apart, fixing it, and breaking it apart again ... there are so many things around and I have only touched the surface!

But he does have a point ... so I have decided to get back on track with my 'mommyhood' blog - this blog dedicated to my son and to my parents - so lets get on with the program.

Its been a fairly great time with Kutie - he is growing up beautifully and he entertains us to no end. Even though he does not say much in adult language, seems like we can understand each other perfectly. This reminds of my childhood days.

I remember one time, my best friend and I decided to start a "code" language - we wanted to make sure no one would be able to understand our conversations. We spent a day in coming up with the signs, created a book - with pictures and notes on what we meant to say! (I wonder if my mom still has that book!) We probably used the 'code' language for a week - it was so hard to communicate that we chucked the idea. Between our friend circle, we probably always had a little coded language - mainly to talk about boys!!

It is interesting how language develops and how we use the same language to shut out, part of our very family that teach us how to communicate. Sorry Amma, if you ever felt left out. Clearly there was not much going on - since I don't even remember much of the 'code' or the conversations - though to be honest - they were fun part of my life that I will not trade for anything. Hope you understand!

Shoooot!!!

Just got back from Kutie's 9 month appointment, got two news. Bad news, his weight (at 18 lbs) is less and good news, his height (at 29 inches) is great.

Doctor would like to see him in another 6 weeks to ensure that he is gaining weight!! She suggested to add another meal apart from breakfast, lunch, dinner that he has now. Finger foods, added texture and some starch in the diets should help. So now starts a new regime for Kutie.

I wonder, how the averages are pulled. My colleague tells me, her son at nine months was at 17 pounds and is around 18 now - his 1st year b-day is in two weeks! I know of another couple whose little girl was at 17 lbs at her birthday. Though at the same time, I know quite a few kids who are sure to be 20-23+ lbs at their birthdays ....

I guess, every baby and every doctor is different! As long as their is no need for tests and shots I think I will be happy.

I wish, I could just "transfer pounds" :)

Changes

So its been a couple of weeks of Kutie moving around on all fours, from last week he is even able to travel the distance faster - though he is still needs to learn about direction! (I hope he does not fall into the stereotype of directions and men! )

Last Tuesday, he for the first time, was able to pull himself up with support from the sofa and today he figured out how to do it alongside the crib as well. The likelihood of him walking at 10 months looks pretty high now ... Wow how time flies! So many changes in last 20 months (he was inside me for 10 months, well past the due date!)

Lets see -
1. Two pink lines!
2. Trips to doctors office -- Slowing overcoming and then completely losing all inhibitions!
3. Reading 1000 of articles, books and still feeling inadequate.
4. Shopping, shopping and more shopping! Nothing fits, window shopping for baby, reading about what to buy for baby, another round of maternity shopping, going back to baby basics... ah! it never ends...
5. First flutters - feeling the first flutters, and knowing that a little angel is waiting to join you!
6. Baby Showers!!! Thank you God, for such wonderful family and friends.
7. Lamaze classes - An informative session. Finally feel a little confident
8. Daily walks with my dad - after a long time, regular chats between daddy's little girl (all grown up) and Daddy Dearest
9. Due Date - Everyone thought (had a big tummy) I will be early, but as due date came closer and arrived everyone was getting nervous. We tried everything - spicy food, long walks ... nothing! The little guy was happy inside!
10. Induction - Ok little guy, you need to meet the world!

11. 10.39 PM - KUTIE IS HERE
12. White sheets and a yellow cap - Kutie's outfit for the first two weeks. We finally took Kutie home after two weeks in the hospital. (ref)
13. New routine - Keep No Schedule! Kutie is King of the world - (though he does not know it!) there are 4 people at his beck and call, to answer his every cry, to show him the world.
14. Shots - Kutie gets his first set of shots ... Poor guy, did not even know what hit him. He was playing with the nurse until the pain hit!
15. Laughter - Even though he used to smile, during his sleep, almost from day 3, it was a joyous feeling to seem him laugh at our antics with sheer joy. Even his eyes lit up ... a pure laugh!
16. Rolling over - A big milestone and that too on my birthday. I don't even think diamonds can top a gift like that!
17. Our trip. Meeting everyone. Kutie was the star and since we were his escorts, we got some attention too!
18. Recognizing us, ready to jump towards us. We finally seem to get his attention.
19. First words - mom, dad, incoherent jumble. He seems to understand everything we say to him and thrive on our words, our songs, our chatter!
20. Crawling on fours - standing up - first steps into a world outside home!

Now I feel a little sad -- he has grown up so much already and has taken his first step into the world outside. Though I know there are many more milestones and many more years of growing up, this, today is the beginning of his true journey!

Can you slow down a bit, my little one?

Ramblings

Skin (noun) is just a tissue to cover our organs – but this tissue determines so much more – Our race, our color, our age!

Women from a very young age, learn to dress up and look pretty. I can see it happening more today when I walk by Target or Babies’ R Us – I see a million outfits for baby girls – and on the other side a pitiful handful for our handsome boys! Girls seem to have a million colored outfits – shades of pink, red, violet, purple, black, and even blue. What do boys have – blue, dark blue, light blue, maybe one green and a brown, if you look hard enough!! Pitiful I tell you!

This starts our age-old affair with ‘looking pretty’! Not that there is anything wrong with looking ‘pretty’ but I think it should be for yourself. Not for anyone else. And age, build, color, and even sex should not matter.

As a new mommy, I realize that things have changed. What I see in the mirror is the ‘new’ look. One with scars of pregnancy and childbirth. But what I see in my son, are my genes, my skin in a whole other person. [Yes, half might be my honey’s, but who’s counting!]

I hope by the time my son grows up; we have a little more sanity as far as “being beautiful” is concerned.

On another note, I just saw this quote, and thought was really funny!

The best way to keep children home is to make the home atmosphere pleasant--and let the air out of the tires. -- Dorothy Parker (1893 - 1967)

Reading back I realize that I have been rambling … blame it on a slow day at work or maybe my muse is in Hawaii enjoying the beach! (Yes, that is a hint to my honey – if he ever gets round to reading my blog )

Let me stop, before I go any further. Ciao!

A cathartic post

When one has a baby, the focus of attention from mommy to baby is swift and sudden. When before mom-to-be was often asked “How are you feeling, Hope you are getting some sleep! You look so beautiful” change to “OH he/she is so cute, so adorable” You can realize this best when your colleague has a baby and after the niceties you want to know when can you see pictures of the baby!

I remember when everyone wanted to see pictures of Kutie, but we did not get round to doing it because we were in the hospital for 2 weeks after my delivery. It was and still is one of the worst periods in my life.

After being a week late from my due date, I was induced on a Thursday night. That night my water broke and it looked like I was on my way to having a baby. We already knew that we might be having a large baby, but being a healthy tall girl myself, no one considered a C-section. By afternoon the next day I was in labor; I had an epidural so the pain was less and by late afternoon I was told I was enough dilated to start pushing. The doctor was a nice guy letting me really try for almost 4-5 hours, finally suggesting I consider a C-section, it was after all baby's health that mattered most he said. He advised that its not such a bad thing, you tried and now whats matters most is the little one's health (I was bleeding fuild from night before, so contamination with baby was a big concern).

After quite an ordeal for the doctors (baby's head was stuck around my pelvis, since I had pushed him out to level 2, so doctors could not pull him out from tummy side - I ended up having two slits - meaning my next baby (if ever) will have to be a c-section too!) Kutie was born around 10.30 PM. He was taken (with my honey) to the nursery, for bath and checking his weight(9 Lbs). I was still in bed being stitched up! I cried. I always had a vision of being able to hold my baby for the first time, right after birth – but that never materialized! I still cry …

After a while, I was taken to a small room, until the nurses are sure I am doing better. I met with my parents and I asked them if they had seen the baby yet. They said they got a glimpse. After what seemed like ages, I finally get to hold my baby. He was all wrapped up in white, a tiny bald fellow – slightly whimpering. The nurse suggested I try to feed him, though he kept going in and out of sleep.

Day Two:Daybreak
I was in my new room with my baby – all happy. Doctors and nurses checking up from time to time; friends and family to visit and the most important person in my arms – what more could you ask for!

Day Three: The sky looks beautiful
We were already planning ahead on our trip back home, I was still not quite comfortable with breastfeeding but I was doing much better. I had some good sleep in between and I was still elated with joy.
I can see grey clouds in the sky.
The nurse checked Kutie’s temperature – a little high. No worries I will come back and check!
A rain-drop.
The nurse shift changed, a new nurse checked his temperature again – still a little high. She left a message with the pediatrician. I pick him up, rock him to sleep. After a while he is sleeping blissfully.
It begins to drizzle.
The pediatrician arrives; he would like to keep Kutie under observation. He mentions that since the delivery was a long process he would like to run a couple of blood (culture) tests – that will take two days. My honey and I are unsure. The nurse comes back for a checkup – no fever. We look hopefully at the doctor – isn’t everything ok, now? No, for a child under 6 months, fever is considered at high risk. You could leave, but without doctors orders. We stay.

Day Four: It’s raining!
They take our baby to the little Nursery to be closely monitored and I am still in our room, the nurses send for us every couple of hours to feed him. He seems to be doing well. Next morning, the nurse mentions that results from the first blood culture are negative. We are elated! But we need to keep him there one more day since they need to test his blood after 48 hours as well to be certain. Its time for me to be discharged; but I don’t want to go home. I can’t.

Day Five: It’s pouring!
I am all exited; we will get to take Kutie home. I walk into the nursery where he is around 5 AM. The nurse has already fed him formula – she did not wake me up. I guess it ok … I need to rest. I come back to bed [a small mothers room next to the nursery – my honey is outside in the waiting room, sleeping on the floor] I come back at 6.30 and sit on the recliner next to my baby. There are 3 other babies all sound asleep. Its time for the next shift for the nurses. I ask the new girl – when will the tests come, today is our day to go home. She tells me he will not go home today!! I am surprised! WHY?

She explains – he had a D-SAT episode. Doctor will need to check on him. I am not sure what she means – never heard of a disease called D-SAT! My honey walks in. He looks tired. The nurse explains that it’s when oxygen level in ones blood stream goes low. This could result in cardiac arrest since the heart thinks oxygen is not needed, it just stops to pump. I am scared. She tells me this happened at night – Kutie had turned blue and the nurse had to revive him!! WHAT THE …!!!

A million questions surge through my brain – Why weren’t we informed? I was right next door. What does it mean – turning blue? What the heck caused a D-SAT? Will it occur again?

I look at Kutie, he smiles in his sleep!

When the doctor comes, I pose my questions. I get answers – not favorable ones that I want to hear. The blood tests are ok. But they need to monitor him. They are not sure what caused the episode. He needs to go without an episode for 48 hours before they can let him go. Two more days in this white nursery!

Day Five: It’s dark outside, it’s still pouring.
Tests, tests and more tests on a little 9 pound man. He screams, he yells. I cannot pick him up, my heart aches. We cry at our helplessness. We call every doctor, every friend we know. We try to get as much information as we can. But it does not help.

Our schedule is set. We sit near our baby – who covered in wires monitoring his heart – looking at the monitors. We have learned to read it – we know about the pulse, the oxygen. We can tell when it starts to dip. But no episode so far – dream a little dream. I talk to my mom, I cry on her shoulder – she helps me quite a bit. She is a strong woman. I love her even more. I feed him with all his wires. It’s not enough – my milk flow hasn’t happened yet. They weigh every diaper, be it poop or pee. They check his weight regularly. A slight decrease is not a good sign. The doctors add formula to his feeding.

Day Six – Its pitch dark!
He has another episode. We still don’t know the cause. His scans appear normal – though the lung seems to have something - a hole, or just mucus - they are not sure, just appears dark on the x-rays! They hear an extra murmur in the heart!

Another theory floats around - are his D-sat's due to acid reflux? He gets a tube through the nose to monitor, a 24 hours camera to see his reaction when a D-SAT occurs. It’s painful to see him; though he seems unaware. He still smiles in his sleep. My honey books a room in a hotel near the hospital, since I am not interested in staying away from the baby. I want someone to be with him all the time (even though there are 3 nurses in the nursery). They talk about us – they wonder why we are there for so long – they tell us to go home and rest one night. I can’t. We take shifts at night. My dad and honey, me and amma. Poo-amma(m-i-l) stays home, coxing us to eat, to remain healthy.

Days and nights have merged, we have lost count!

Day ... A ray of sunshine
We are used to the routine now. I don’t care when we will go home. Babies around have gone by, new babies have taken their place. I want to talk to other moms, listen to their pain, and tell them about mine. But I can’t. I fear anything and everything. I hold the baby close whenever I can. He gets a medicine for acid reflux – just trying our luck! He does not have an episode.

He goes for a MRI scan … the doctors say he was a good kid – he slept through it! I wanna scream – if he is so good, why are you keeping him?!?

We will see the results tomorrow. His second chest exam reveals nothing! His heart does not have a hole, chest is clearing up, his blood cultures are all negative! What the heck is going on?

Day … Daybreak
MRI scans reveals – a normal one week only baby. They have tested his heart, his brain, his blood – they can’t find anything! No cause? Was it a miracle? Are our prayers answered? YES! I know they have been.
The doctor is ready for us take our son home. It’s been a long two weeks. We still have to use an in-home monitor as a precaution for some days- but it should be ok they say.

Sunny skies and light showers
We bring Kutie home today! We are all happy. We are all nervous. Now that we are home what does it mean. What if the monitor catches another episode? We have learned CPR at the hospital, but will it help? What if the monitor does not catch anything (since we put the plugs, we might not do it right)? We vote for sleepless nights again.

Dad stays awake till 2 AM, Amma stays awake from 2 onwards. I wake up every two hours to feed Kutie.

My honey’s 2 week paternity leave is over, he is back at work. Poor honey! His holiday – time of rest, time to be with baby – was completely over in a blink of an eye – at the hospital!

I don’t know how long we can continue this … we take Kutie to the pediatrician. She checks his heart – she can barely hear the murmur. She wants to keep the monitor through the weekend and then stop using it. She is confident that everything will be ok.

JOY! Pure Joy surges through my heart.

It’s now 9 months past the event, Kutie is doing great. Even today, when he sleeps he smiles a little. I often remember the nights at the hospital – I touch his chest and give him a kiss, & send a prayer before falling asleep.

Kutie's First Vishu

Happy Vishu, my dear Kutie

Vishu is one of the big festivals in Kerala, India. Held on the first day of Malaylam month of Medam it signifies our new year. Having a 'Vishukani' and bursting of fire crackers are the big highlights of the day, apart from the feast that is served at lunch.

Being the first new year for my little one, we had to make it a great day. [
Though, just like baby's first b'day its an event for parents than the little one.] Unfortunately, being miles away from your hometown, you might not find all the articles for the Vishukani - the offerings to the divine that is traditionally set up in an Urli [tray] and has to be viewed right after one wakes up on the day, before daybreak.

The main thing missing from our kani was yellow flowers 'konna-poo' and betal nut leaves. (We found some other yellow flowers for the occasion from the local Albertsons as a replacement). All other items, - rice, coconut, fruits, vegetables, nilavilakku [lamp], vallkandi [metal mirror], were present. (Here is a snapshot of the items from the main tray).

My wonderful honey also decided to add on another tradition to the event by giving silver coins as Vishukkaineetam [token coins given by elders to little ones in the house after viewing the Vishukani]. We purchased the same yesterday evening.

Yesterday night, after Kutie was asleep we set up the kani in preparation for the early morning. Since kani needs to be seen before daybreak, we decided to wake up around 4.30 AM to light the lamp.

5:00AM: Poo-amma woke up early and had already lit the lamp, when my honey woke me up - placing a hand on my eyes, indicating me to keep them closed until I saw the Kani. It was divine sight indeed! We received our Vishukkaineetam & blessings from poo-amma. Since it was still very early, we debated on waking Kutie up since he might start to cry. After some debate we decided to try our luck and I picked him up and brought him over to see the Kani. Bingo! He did not cry and slowly woke up to see the wondrous sight. Maybe it was all the arrangements or just something divine that he did not cry and even started to smile and enjoy in a little while. He received his first Vishukkaineetam from all three of us.

9.00AM: After bath, and breakfast we started our preparations for the feast ahead. The first item was Semiya payasam [kheer], mainly to ensure that no other flavors would interfere with the desert. Then we went on to Avial, Mangakootan, Olan, Ingitharu, & Papadam. We also had chips and pickles to complete the feast. Around 11, we decided to open up the 'Little Tikes - Activity Walker' for Kutie-pie. Unfortunately, he was more interested in the little parts before they were assembled; and by the time it was ready, he was off to sleep. But this ensured that we had time to have the feast and enjoy a movie! ;) [That reminds me, I haven't watched TV for almost two weeks! - WOW, that should be a record in itself, another blog topic, I guess]

12.12 PM: Lunch time! Ah what a wonderful feast.

In the afternoon since it was pretty nice outside we decided to go to the nearby temple. We were all tired and ready to hit the bed when we got back. But I voted to watch the movie out since its back to work tomorrow and the bounds of routine will ensure that we will not get another chance soon enough!

Wish you all a Very Happy New Year! May all your dreams come true!

Ready, Steady, Go...

Yes! Kutie is moving on his fours now!!
Just a bit for now, but I am sure pretty soon
Its time to clean up our carpets, cover all the plugs, and ensure nothing is reachable to his tiny hands!!! [Predicting a busy weekend.]

The gem cannot be polished without friction, nor man perfected without trials. -Chinese proverb.
And trials it has been for the little guy for quite a while now.

UPDATE: He actually sat up on his own today the first time.

Problem Child

I just came across two blogs “My Many Colored Days” and “Morning Glory” that have started a ‘Women 2 Women’ Tuesday sessions! A wonderful idea, I must add. This will be my first article for the same, though it’s a day late [apologies]

Every big problem was at one time a wee disturbance. -Unknown

How do you define a problem child?

Is it that little boy who came to our house, when I was probably 10-12 and broke my record-player? I don’t remember his name, but I still think of him as a brat. I remember him running around my house and taking everything down. I did not like it and I had an overwhelming feeling of shouting at him to stop. Are his parents to blame who kept saying “Oh he is naughty!” and once in a while, “Don’t do that!”

Is it that girl, my cousin, who refused to eat anything but chocolates and ice-scream for dinner, lunch and anytime in-between? We had to literally force feed her!

Will my son be considered a problem-child by someone, down the road? Probably. Not because he is one, but of the circumstance! I loved my record-player and hated the kid for destroying it. [But I still think his parents should have offered to help – or maybe they did, don’t recall!] I remember one of older girls telling me that I could play with her Barbie doll – since I was now old enough!

If you cannot define a problem-child - then can you ensure your child will not be considered one by others? I have realized that ‘problem-child’ is not the problem … it is the situation, the circumstance. It is not the child that is a problem; it is the parent, the society. How we define a problem and the kid involved is entirely on our perception. We might be impressed by a kid who talks a lot or we might called them a chatterbox; we might be impressed by a kid who loves to play or we might say they are wasting their life; we might be impressed by a kid who reads a lot or we might call them a bookworm!

I know my son will have his moments. When my child misbehaves do I yell at him, feel ashamed and walk away apologetically? Or do I give him a hug; tell myself he is still learning and help him learn the 'worldly-ways' with a smile?

I hope its the latter, for my little Kuttie's sake! :) I wish, I hope, I pray ...

Round Two - Stretches

Stretches are by far the easiest part of the exercise for me - it makes me feel ready to get on the treadmill and after a good run - it relaxes and rejuvenates. But they are also the hardest to get accustomed. Its easy to skip a stretch and make a run to the car since you are running late, or skip it and jump on the treadmill to save a few minutes.

Well, when your baby keeps you up at night or you need to want to watch that movie, you go to bed late and then its hard to wake up in the morning. Yes I am guilty, I skipped four days last week! But I was good with taking the stairs! :) And even better at bringing lunch from home.
So overall not too bad a week. But lets revisit my ground rules, some things need to change

Goal: Get back in shape
Time remaining: 94 days

  1. Lets check the weight one time - I need that extra push, this time around.
  2. Hit the stairs - twice at least
  3. No more gum!! Yes to H2O!
  4. Get a buddy for moral support
Alright, lets hope I do better this week!

Wish me luck!

Workout – Round One

Warm-up

As I was talking with my honey about 1st year birthday parties, I realized that my son’s big event is less than 4 months away - and I still have the "just had a baby" look!!! So it’s back to gym, starting today … and this blog – I am hoping will be my saving grace. Every Tuesday I will post an update.

And here are the ground rules to follow

Goal:
Get back in shape
Time Remaining: 101 days

  1. No checking weight - last time I was trying to lose weight, this threw me off completely. After the first few weeks I hit a plateau - checking my weight started to depress me so much that I quit!! So this time, no checking weight.

  2. Hit the stairs: Our office is on the fourth floor - so its will be a nice little extra kick.

  3. Keep your head low and you will not see the treats strewn around the office!

I think 3 rules should be easy to follow.
Here I go …wish me luck …

In sickness and health [Part Two]

Update on my son's pink eye!

Well he hasn't had any pink-eye yet!! YAY!!! His left eye still gets a little mucus, though. It might take a week to get back to normal, I guess. But the weekend wasn't bad at all and we all had a good time in sunny CA!
